We considered an all-aluminum design, which is the lightest, but we found using all-aluminum made the smaller sprockets more prone to wear, as we use them most often. So we ended up deciding to just use aluminum for the larger sprockets and high-strength steel for the smaller sprockets to balance strength, weight and durability.
